Introducing Brown Owls Finland

Hi everyone! The Finnish Brown Owls are a very faraway, very small chapter of Brown Owls. Actually it is just me so far. I'm Ulla, and I have been a Faraway member since 2008. That is when I made my uniform:

I have been learning new skills through the links provided by Pip, like crocheting potholders

and lots of Granny Squares in May and during the months of our summer.

The biggest project of Finnish Brown Owls was a challenge to make quilts, blankets and sheets for orphanages in Tanzania. This challenge was organized by the church, and they ended up with 177 quilts or blankets, 441 sheets and 24 pillow cases. This was my contribution:

plus this one:

Three quilts, two granny blankets (plus knitted squares for one!), and eight sheets. I called this my "local" community project, and I hope to find more suitable charity projects for next year. It would also be fun to find more members for this chapter, from Finland or from Scandinavia or even from Europe. We wouldn't have to be able to physically meet; I have enjoyed my virtual membership in Brown Owls and made it more real through the things I have made. Making Softies for Mirabel, a quilt top for the Bushfire quilts project, or restashing crafters in Victoria were also more Brown Owl than just me.  - I promise to make it shorter next time!

Brown Owls 2010

Hello!

Hi! I just wanted to check in and let you know about Brown Owls for next year - and thank you all for your input and participation and enthusiasm and crafty hard work. Brown Owls is all about you guys - and you all helped spread a really awesome Craft Is Good message this year!

Next year, Brown Owls will be more widespread and more inclusive. Where ever you may be in the world, you can start your own local chapter. Maybe your chapter has 4 members... or 40! Some cities will have a few chapters. Others will only have one.

You just need to adhere to the Brown Owls Code Of Conduct... and complete an application to register your chapter. Your appointed leader or leaders can write on this blog to post meeting updates and project ideas. And you can manage your own members (including membership fees and membership packs if you choose to have them) and meetings in the way that suits you. You might even have your own satellite blog or google group. Up to you!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below. Existing chapters will run as is, in the way they choose (if they choose to!) next year!

MELBOURNE people - the big chapter will not run in the same way next year. You are free to start your own Brown Owls in your suburb -to keep it convenient for you - and ensure that you get what YOU want to get from Brown Owls. And if you want to cross town and join a non-local chapter, of course you can!

Thank you so much to everyone for supporting our Owly efforts - mucho looking forward to the THIRD YEAR of Owling in 2010. All chapters will be linked to on this blog in the sidebar - by state or country - so you can see if you want to join a nearby group or start your own!

So have a think and see if you want to be a Brown Owls leader in your neck of the woods. Or hang tight and wait a month or two-and see where the chapters are forming, before you decide! Applications will be ongoing - there is no deadline or cut off date.

xx Pip

Canberra:: 'Tis the Season!

Photo from here. Tutorial over at Sadie and Lance!

Hohoho Canberra Brown Owls - it's time for our last meet of the year! Because everyone suffers a bit from the seasonal craziness this time of year, we're keeping it simple.

Sunday December 13th, 2 - 4 pm (not the 15th!!)
Tilley's Divine Cafe, Lyneham

BYO craft - but keep it small-ish please! We'll book a table of course, but it can get a bit squeezy. So maybe no hand-pieced quilts, hmmmm? (yes, Im looking at you Michelle L!!) And of course Tilley's has lots of yummy snacks and drinks available.

If you'd like to get into the Christmas spirit, bring along a Secrst Santa pressie of crafty notions up to $10 value. Adding a little something handmade would be extra lovely, don't you think? It's totally optional of course - but if you put a pressie in the basket, you can take another one out!

Please rsvp as usual so we can book a table with enough room for all the Owls.

See you there!

Brisbane Brown Owls - How do YUDU!!

(the amazing YUDU machine)

The Brisbane Brown Owls spent another Sunday crafting away in our sweet, sunny nest. This Sunday we were lucky enough to get to try out the fabulous, new YUDU machine. Big thanks to Katy for carting not only the machine but vinyl, inks, screens, fabric, cards and lot and lots of other bits and pieces in for us to try.

We had a crafty swap which was lots of fun too and ate lots of yummy treats!

Sunday was our last meet for 2009. Thanks to everyone who's come along this year and made it such a fun group and a special thanks goes to our craftin' Prefect, Rebecca for organising our crafty nest every month!!

Canberra Brown Owls - Appliquing in November

string of hearts, originally uploaded by jude hill.

Hi Canberra Brown Owls!

Our next meeting is on Sunday 22 November at Downer Community Centre, from 2 pm to 4.30 pm.

Michelle is going to teach us all to applique two ways - blanket stitch and needleturn with freezer paper! We'll be learning on scrap pieces of fabric, mainly because it's the easiest way to learn. Once you're mastered the techniques, you can applique on and with anything you like - skirts, tea towels, bags - you name it!

Kits will be provided on the day free of charge and they will include the sticky papers we need, fabric, thread, floss and needles. Just bring along some sharp pins, a pencil and your scissors, and we'll be right to go!

Don't forget your $6 for the room hire and bring something to share for afternoon tea if you like. Tea and coffee are provided, as usual.

This is the last formal meeting for the year - but at the meeting we will be discussing where and when to have our Christmas gathering in December, so come along.

Don't forget to RSVP so we know how many chairs and tables to put out! See you all then!

Launceston Owls Get Christmassy!

Bring along a Christmas project - decorations, wrapping paper printing, cards, toy making, other gifts you are making, whatever you fancy.

Monday 30th November  7.30pm at Seworld, 88 Elizabeth Street.

RSVP by leaving a comment below.

Sydney Brown Owl meeting This Thursday - Softie for Mirabel making

Hello Owls,
Our next owl meeting is this Thursday at the Centrehouse in Lane Cove.

We are going to try and make some softies for Mirabel which we will either send to Melbourne to join with all the softie loveliness at Meet Me at Mikes or we will give them to Mirabel in Sydney to help local children.

Either way Mirabel is a really worthy cause and anything we can contribute to them is fantastic.

Amy has put on the sydney google group a list of the kinds of things that we could bring along on Thursday.

I am going to bring along presewn sofites that need stuffing and handsewing, maybe some people will be crocheting?

Please let us know in the comments if you are going to be joining in the fun - don't forget to bring a mug for tea or coffee.

Owl Broochs with the Adelaide Owls

Golly Gee our Adelaide meetings are good fun - They always leave me feels ever so happy and totally inspired. Last night we all met for BYO or to make owl brooches.

We used a pattern from jojoebi to make our little brooches - she's got a great tutorial that is worth a look.

On the way out a group of us spotted the most amazing bike... couldn't help but take a few photos! How cool!

Brown Owls Canberra - October report!

We had a good turnout for the Canberra Brown Owls on a cold wet Sunday, and we welcomed our newest Brown Owl - Cathy from Adelaide Brown Owls - to the nest!

The October meeting had crept up rather suddenly on the prefects (oops!) and given them a right royal fright, so they decided to hold another BYO afternoon! I love BYO afternoons - you always have a good time seeing what others are making, and that is inspiration in itself!!

Cass prettied up a little t-shirt. Bron got clever with pinwheel brooches. Michelle L worked on crocheting a sock. Cristy and Michelle W worked on dolls.

Cathy made a beautiful bead and wire brooch.

Naomi and Lea made stencilled bags and felted creations, respectively. Topped off with some lovely food, coffee and tea and the usual fantastic conversation, it was a fabulous afternoon of crafting and friendship!

Next month we are meeting on Sunday 22 November and Michelle (that's me) will be teaching us (that's you) how to applique, both needleturn and blanket stitched. More on that in a couple of weeks though.

Gocco with Sydney!

The very best thing about owls is that we learn and share and help each other. Don't you agree? Tonight, Sydney Owls were lucky to have a gocco demo by Lisa and Manu. Jen brought a third gocco along, so everyone got a chance to try some gocco printing. We printed on paper. We printed on fabric. We even printed on noodle boxes. We had an amazing night.

I was in the back room, so most of the designs show were created by Lisa of The Red Thread. But both rooms were had quite the buzz! Rockets, stars, birds and ornaments. Probably the biggest hit of the night was the gocco stamper. I heard rumours of gals planning to concoct their own!

It was another terrific one for the Sydney gals. We've got quite a few demos to round out the year and roll into the next! Start clearing your calenders --

Early November - Tatting, Leichhardt
Mid November - Softies for Mirabel, Lane Cove
Early December - Owls Christmas Party and Secret Swap
January - Design Your Own Name Badge
Coming Soon - Bookbinding with Michelle, Brown Owls field trip and more!

Sydney Owls Meeting Next Week - Gocco Demo

Hello lovely Owls,

Our next meeting is Thursday 22nd October at our Lane Cove venue: Centre House.

Manu and I (Lisa) are bringing our Goccos and Gocco Stamper for a demo and the chance for everyone to do some printing.

We will have 4 designs to make screens from and you can choose which of them you'd like to print - there'll be something Owly, something Christmasy, and... a couple of others, yet to be designed. Any requests?

Please bring paper, cards, fabric, or whatever you'd like to print onto. Depending on how many of us there are you might get to do around 40 prints (it's pretty quick), so come prepared! We should probably all BYO some craft too, and some snacks would be good as well.

We'll also ask for a few dollars each to cover the costs of Gocco materials, and don't forget that have to pay for the venue (about $5 each, depending on the number of people).

So, RSVP on this post. Hope you can make it!

  • Fabric needs to be of the sort of quality YOU would like to receive!
  • Can be vintage or NEW! Up to you!
  • You need to wrap your fabric up so we can't see it (we're doing the swap lucky dip style) - wrap it in newspaper if you please. Wrap EACH PIECE separately.

Craft! BYO current project. Don't have a project? No worries at all, just come along to the evening and be inspired!

Please bring along your crafted creations, ‘zines and books to show off too - we love to see them!

See you there,

Xx Cherry, Tracey & Cathy
