St George and Sutherland Brown Owls - September Meet Up

Canberra Brown Owls - stamp making!

We've just had a lovely afternoon of crafting with the Canberra Brown Owls.  This month prefect Bron organised for us to do stamp making.

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

We used some tools that Bron had specially bought, and the erasers in the kits that she had lovingly put together, and set to work!

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

Personally I found keeping to a straight line pretty difficult, but that may have been because I was talking too much.

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

Or eating too many of Bron's lovely cupcakes (which were TO DIE FOR!!)

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

So by the end of the day we each had a couple of stamps made. It's a lot of fun, and I'm going to give it another go at home, but this time with less sugar under my belt.

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

Thanks Prefect Bron! You're ace!

Brown Owls - 20 August meeting

Our next meeting is Saturday 17 September, and I'm hoping to organise a crochet session! But keep an eye on the blog for details a couple of weeks beforehand.

Hi there Owlies,

Our next meeting is coming up - next Saturday.

Yet another chance to finish off something that's been bugging you, or to start a wonderful new project! Julie and Lianne will be available to help with Tremari and learn to knit and crochet.

At this stage we have decided to cancel our Tuesday class due to low numbers. We are currently looking at whether it would be feasible to hold a quarterly Tuesday night workshop. We welcome your ideas and feedback.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

Kind regards,
Lianne and Julie.

Cootamundra Brown Owls September Meet

We had a great first month at Cootamundra Brown Owls. We had only four people at each session but as it's only early days and didn't have much publicity happening, I think that was pretty good.

We had cake and lots of crafting and chatting.

Dorothy & Robyn crocheting
We had people crocheting, appliqueing, beading & card making, what fun! Silly me forgot to take photos until the last minute so I only have one of these two lovely ladies at the evening session.

Next month:
Day session: Thursday 1st September 1-3pm Stephen Ward Rooms, Cootamundra library. I will be away for this session & my mother-in-law (above right) has kindly agreed to "host" for me, so go & say hi to her!

Evening session: Tuesday 6th September 6-8pm Stephen Ward Rooms, Cootamundra library.

Tea/Coffee/Hot choc & cake or other yummies will be supplied.
Both sessions will be BYO project but I can put together either an easy card making kit or easy beading kit for you & lend you my tools if you don't have something to work on. Please RSVP & state what session & what kit you'd like.
FREE.

Sunny Coast Brown Owls have a BYO craft-a-long!

On the weekend we had out August meetup for Sunshine Coast Brown Owls. What a lovely group of people we're accumulating there. I can't wait for us to grow even more!

It was a BYO craft day, and our first day at our new location- the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre!

People were sewing, paper crafting, painting, crocheting, and cutting. It was a frenzy of activity! Thankfully we had Stephen from the The Sewing Machine Doctor there to help some of us our when we were sure about our machines! Here are some photos from the day:

Howdy!

Announcing our next gathering ~ Tuesday 6th September ~ RASPBERRY RIPPLE night!

Yes... as some of the participants from our gathering earlier this month may well have heard me talk of... we're going for a themed night next gathering - a broad theme, that everyone can interpret however they so wish. I can offer a couple of possible interpretations of our Raspberry Ripple theme:

1. Crochet Ripple'ing - I shall bring a pattern, or maybe I may even do a worksheet - yes I shall. It would be great if a couple of participants, who may already know the delights of rippling can raise a hand and volunteer to be called 'teach' for the night, otherwise we'll just muddle along, giving it a good ol' rippling go. If you're new to crochet I'm sure there will be someone who will be able to start you off in the right direction - for crochet supplies I would suggest bringing along a 4.5 or 5mm crochet hook and some 8 ply (or double ply - they're the same thing) wool, in colour of your choice, though if you're going all out raspberry ripple stylee then go for something raspberrylike.

2. Raspberry coloured - craft project of your choice, in a raspberry inspired colour. Here's some suggestions of colours that might be considered of a raspberry hue - raspberry, blush, red, pinky, pinkish / redish, berry, cerise, ruby.

3. Sounds - BYO project of any kind / any colour - bring something that is not in a shade of raspberry and you can just blow raspberry's at opportune moments during the evening

4. Eats - Madame Brussels do nice cup cakes - there is definitely one with pink icing, maybe it is raspberry flavoured, so you could eat one of those

Here are the details:
when: Tuesday 6th September 2011
at: 6.30 - 9pm
where: The Parlour, Madame Brussels, level 3, 59-63 Bourke St, Melbourne 3000
bring: your crochet gear (4.5 or 5mm hook & wool, see above) if you are wanting to join the crochet ripple crew, BYO craft project of a raspberry hue (if you so wish)
cost: no fee for attendance but you may like to purchase a drink or a delight from the Madame Brussels menu, by way of a thankyou for room usage
RSVP: in the comments section below please - indicating your name eg. Sue H or Raspberry R

I do have a few other ideas for themed nights, so will unleash them as time goes by, but do let me know if you have any thoughts / suggestions / ideas / pleas / wants / hidden desires.

Will be lovely to see you

Dont forget to RSVP in the comments below, with your name ~ and hands up anyone who would like to be a 'teach' for the night, there can never be too many 'teach's' so go for it with the hands up.

sue x

ps. I have also scheduled all gatherings for the rest of the year. Due to availability at Madame Brussels they are all tuesdays (apologies to those that like the circulating days of the week) - Tues 4th October, Tues 8th November, Tues 6th December. I've added these to the Brown Owls calendar which you'll find in the column over there--------->--->-->->->->>>>

Canberra Brown Owls - 20 August - eraser stamp carving

Hello Canberra owls!

It's only just over a week until our next Brown Owls meeting, on 20 August, and I am very excited to tell you we are revisiting an old favourite this month - eraser stamp carving!

If you haven't tried it before carving your own stamp from an eraser might sound a bit mad, but its really lots of fun, super simple, and the results you get can be quite amazing!

There are loads of tutorials out there - here are just a couple of links to get you started:

source

The tricky thing here is deciding what design you want to carve! This can be anything you want, but keep in mind that this is a bit like stencil making - you want to start with a pretty simple design that's easy to cut around. As always you can find also loads of inspiration over at flickr, or have a look at the stamps our owls carved up last time, or even just do a google image search for eraser stamp. And remember you don't have to be limited to designs especially for stamps! Any simple line drawing can be carved - so check out things like free embroidery patterns too! Interesting computer fonts would be fun too!

source
We'll have two sets of carving tools to share, but we could use a couple of extra if anyone has any. You can pick them up at craft shops for about $15 if you're really keen.

Other things you'll need are:
  • erasers for carving - just any will do, but make sure they are big enough for the design you want to carve. You can pick them up super cheap at $2 shop type places - my favourite are the HUGE ones you can get at hot dollar.
  • the design for your stamp
  • a pencil for drawing your design onto your stamp
  • tracing paper to transfer your design to your stamp if you aren't confident drawing it on by hand. (greaseproof paper like Glad Bake works really well for this!)
  • a stamp pad and paper for testing your stamp when you're done with the carving!

We will have kits available - each one will contain two regular size erasers, some tracing paper and a blank card to stamp on. Please let us know in the comments below if you need a kit so we can make sure we have enough for everyone!. You'll need $2 for the kit and use of the ink pads and carving tools, or just $1 if you want to use the ink pads and carving tools. Or you can bring your own!

source

Of course if you don't think stamp carving is quite your thing we'd still love you to come along!!! Please bring what ever you are working on, and we'd love to see show-and-tell from last meeting too!

Phew! That was a lot of typing! Here's the important bits for you, just in case you don't want to read it all again! ;o)

The next meeting is on Saturday 20 August at the Downer Community Centre from 2-4pm.
Don't forget to bring:
  • $5 for room hire,
  • $2 for a kit if you would like one, or $1 to use the tools and ink pads if you need and
  • any nibbles you might want to bring to share for arvo tea.

And please remember to RSVP in the comments - especially if you need a kit!

Can't wait to see you!
